THE OPPORTUNITY
GovAct is seeking an innovative, highly organized, and entrepreneurial Director of Development to build and lead the next chapter of its fast-paced fundraising. Reporting to and working closely with GovAct’s Founder and CEO, the Director will join the Executive Team and serve as the architect of a growing development team and operation built to scale. This is an exceptional opportunity to partner with a dynamic, visionary CEO who is deeply engaged in fundraising and brings strong relationships across Governors’ Offices, partner organizations, and the philanthropic community.
The Director will lead a development operation, with a focus on institutional and major donor giving – managing a team and consultants dedicated to identifying and cultivating donors, developing proposals and budgets, managing grant reporting and compliance, and stewarding funders across GovAct and its alliances. The Development Director will build on existing strategies, systems, and talent to scale fundraising across GovAct and its alliances through shared tools, materials, and coordinated approaches. Working closely with the CEO, the Director will also directly cultivate and steward a portfolio of cross-area funders.
The ideal candidate brings a strategic lens, deep development expertise, a proven track record of effectively managing a growing development team, and relationships in the philanthropic landscape aligned with GovAct’s work. The Director will be a trusted thought partner to the CEO, a skilled manager, and a confident ambassador for GovAct’s mission.
This position offers a rare chance to shape and scale the fundraising engine behind one of the most innovative cross-state efforts in the country to protect democracy, reproductive rights, and public health and safety when state leadership has never mattered more.
This salaried role is not limited to a standard 40-hour workweek. Given Govact’s fast growth and pace, some extended hours, including evenings or weekends, may be required. Occasional travel for in-person meetings and events is also required. The position is remote, with a preference for candidates based in the San Francisco Bay Area, New York City, or Washington, D.C. A hybrid option is available for candidates based in these markets.
