About this role

THE OPPORTUNITY:

Carson Elementary School is looking for a strong, steady principal who will set high expectations for students and staff and hold everyone to them. Our staff, families and community want a school where every student is safe, behavior expectations are clear and consistent, and classroom time is protected for learning.

The next principal will lead with a firm, fair and visible presence; build schoolwide systems for behavior and discipline that staff can count on; and lead a Professional Learning Community (PLC) culture that is deeply valued in our district. This is a chance to lead a close-knit rural school community that is ready for clear direction and committed to doing the work.

POSITION OBJECTIVE:

Stevenson-Carson School District principals are stewards of the District’s vision, mission, goals and instructional initiatives. The Carson Elementary School principal is first an instructional leader who spends the majority of each day on the quality of teaching and learning, and also the leader responsible for a safe, orderly school where that learning can happen. The principal observes instruction often, gives candid and actionable feedback, and holds students and staff accountable to high expectations.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

School Culture, Safety and Student Behavior

  •    Establish and consistently enforce clear, schoolwide expectations for student behavior, taught explicitly and reinforced daily.
  •    Lead a multi-tiered system of supports (MTSS) for behavior, including positive behavior supports, fair and consistent consequences, and timely intervention for students who need more.
  •    Respond to serious behavior incidents promptly and decisively, following district policy, state discipline rules (Chapter 392-400 WAC), and the requirements of IDEA and Section 504.
  •    Be highly visible in classrooms, hallways, the cafeteria, recess, arrival and dismissal.
  •    Use discipline and attendance data to identify patterns and adjust practices, communicating clearly with families when behavior concerns arise.
  •    Maintain a calm, safe school environment and lead safety planning, drills and emergency response.

Instructional Leadership and Professional Learning Communities

  •    Lead and sustain high-functioning PLCs in which teams answer the four critical questions: what we want students to learn, how we will know they learned it, how we respond when they do not, and how we extend learning when they already have.
  •    Ensure PLC time is protected, focused and productive, with common assessments, clear learning targets, and regular analysis of student results.
  •    Develop, implement and monitor a data-driven school improvement plan using multiple measures of student achievement.
  •    Build a schoolwide system of academic intervention and extension so every student receives additional time and support when needed.
  •    Align curriculum, instruction and assessment with the Washington State Learning Standards and district learning goals.
  •    Design and lead professional learning that meets the needs of staff and students.

Staff Leadership and Accountability

  •    Supervise and evaluate certificated and classified staff, including evaluation under Washington’s Teacher/Principal Evaluation Program (TPEP).
  •    Set clear professional expectations, give frequent and honest feedback, and follow through when expectations are not met.
  •    Recognize and develop strong practice, building staff leadership through school-based teams.
  •    Manage staff and fiscal resources to support student achievement and meet legal responsibilities.

Family and Community Partnership

  •    Communicate clearly and regularly with families, staff and the community, both in writing and in person.
  •    Partner with families and the Stevenson-Carson community to support student learning and behavior.
  •    Demonstrate commitment to closing opportunity and achievement gaps for all student groups.
  •    Be visible and supportive of all curricular and extracurricular programs.

District Curriculum Coordination

  •    Coordinate district curriculum work as assigned by the Superintendent, which may include curriculum review and adoption, K–12 alignment, and district assessment planning.

Key Requirements

  • Required
  • At least three years of successful certificated experience.
  • At least one year of educational leadership or supervision experience.
